TotalEnergies & Air Liquide accelerate decarbonisation with green hydrogen!

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide join forces to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year and reduce 450,000 tonnes of CO₂. A major step forward!

As part of their commitment to the energy transition, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, two members of our network, have announced a strategic collaboration to decarbonize refineries in Europe through ambitious green hydrogen projects.

A Strong Commitment to a Low-Carbon Industry

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have signed agreements to develop two major projects in the Netherlands, aimed at producing and delivering 45,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, powered largely by renewable electricity from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, co-developed by TotalEnergies (50%) and RWE (50%).

This initiative aligns with TotalEnergies’ ambition to decarbonize all hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. It also contributes to European goals for renewable energy and CO₂ emissions reduction in industrial and transportation sectors.

Two Key Projects for Green Hydrogen Production

  • A 250 MW Electrolyzer in Zeeland
A 250 MW electrolyzer project will be developed in the Netherlands through a 50/50 joint venture between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide. Once commissioned in 2029, it will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, primarily for the Zeeland refinery. This project represents a total investment of approximately €600 million and has applied for support under European and national subsidy programs.
  • A Partnership to Supply Antwerp with 15,000 Tons of Green Hydrogen
As part of Air Liquide’s ELYgator project – a 200 MW electrolyzer located in Maasvlakte (Netherlands) – TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement for 130 MW of capacity, enabling the production of 15,000 tons of green hydrogen per year for its Antwerp platform. This project, expected to be operational by the end of 2027, will reduce CO₂ emissions at the Antwerp site by up to 150,000 tons per year.

A Significant Impact on Emissions Reduction

Through these two projects, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by 450,000 tons per year in the Zeeland and Antwerp refineries, marking a major step forward in the decarbonization of European industry.

Strengthened Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

This partnership represents a new milestone in the collaboration between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, following their first joint project in 2023 to supply the Normandy refinery with green hydrogen. With these new initiatives, both companies reaffirm their leadership in the energy transition and demonstrate their ability to develop innovative and sustainable solutions.
